Overspeed Protection on an FCC Flue Gas Expander

CEPSA Rabida Oil Refinery Spain needed to replace old obsolete Speed Interface equipment that was providing Overspeed protection on a FCC Flue Gas Expander. Frequency data was collected and provided by AIRPAX 70085‐1010‐328 sensors, with the transmitters working in conjunction with a Moore Mycro 325E Controller used to control the fan blades.

Because the replacement solution required certified SIL 3 capable transmitters to comply because the replacement solution required certified SIL 3 capable transmitters to comply with IEC 61511 standards, a trio of Moore Industries SFY SIL 3 Capable Functional SafetyFrequency‐to‐DC Transmitters were used to replace the original units. The SFY transmitters obtain the frequency data from the existing AIRPAX 70085‐1010‐328 speed sensors and convert the frequency input signal to a proportional, input‐to‐output isolated 4‐20mAsignal directly to the refinery’s Honeywell Safety Management System. The Honeywell system handles the required 2oo3 voting logic and sends the Overspeed trip alarm signals back to the fan blade motor control to protect the turbofan blades.
