In January 2016, IEEE/PES held its NPEC (Nuclear Power Engineering Committee) meeting in Cocoa Beach, Florida (NPEC is IEEE’s nuclear power-related technical committee). At the event Tina Todd, Director of Engineering at Moore Industries, presented on the use of Smart instruments in the UK nuclear industry. The presentation was centered around a white paper she wrote for Moore Industries entitled: Vetting Smart Instruments for the Nuclear Industry, which she wrote for Moore Industries.
Moore Industries worked with British Energy in 2004 to develop guidelines for the assessment of Smart devices for use in nuclear applications. Today that guideline, called EMPHASIS, is owned by Control and Instrumentation Nuclear Industries Forum (CINIF). The IEC 61508 safety standard, for which Moore Industries achieved certification, meets the majority of EMPHASIS requirements.
Information on Moore Industries’ IEC 61508 products can be found on the Functional Safety section of our website.
