EMPHASIS Assessment Tool Applied to Moore Industries Smart Instruments

Moore Industries worked with the Control and Instrumentation Nuclear Industries Forum (CINIF) in the United Kingdom in the original development of the EMPHASIS assessment tool for 'Smart ' Instruments, with the STA trip alarm achieving SIL 2. Since 2005 EDF Energy has assessed and qualified several Moore Industries Smart devices using EMPHASIS including:

SPA2 Site and PC Programmable Alarm Moore Industries

STA SIL2 Compliant Programmable Current Voltage and RTD Thermocouple Safety Trip Alarms Moore Industries

TRY DIN and HPP Temperature Transmitters Moore Industries

The EMPHASIS method assesses a device’s compliance with the IEC 61508 Functional Safety standard, along with other requirements specific to the UK nuclear industry. It provides the end user with confidence that the firmware or software in these devices meet the required good practice levels of design, testing and production to achieve the integrity levels needed for project applications and to reduce the risk of systematic failures.

Compliance with IEC 61508 significantly contributes toward the EMPHASIS assessment for Production Excellence, one of two “legs” used to substantiate safety to the UK’s nuclear regulator. The second leg involves Independent Confidence Building Measures – measures and techniques such as Static Analysis or Statistical Testing on the product and or its source code to identify potential systemic failures. The Independent Confidence Building Measures also take into account the application environment and demands on the device being deployed.

Whether you are in the UK or elsewhere, the EMPHASIS assessment of Moore Industries’ product ensures they were developed to the strictest criteria including IEC 61508 standards.
